JFC C: Simonstown through to quarter final

June 28, 2017

Simonstown's Andrew Kearney

Simonstown Gaels 1-13 Seneschalstown 1-10

Simonstown produced a tenacious performance in the lashing rain in Martry on Monday night. This Junior C championship game was tight throughout with each team having their periods of dominance but it was Simonstown who dealt the killer blow in the dying moments of the game. Alan Meade created a goal from nothing drilling the ball past the helpless Seneschalstown goalkeeper.

Simonstown began the game very well going into a 4 point lead after 12 minutes. However, Seneschalstown were very intelligent on the break and scored their goal through a well worked move, handpassing the ball across for a palm in. Mark Larkin started the game very well scoring 2 great points from distance but unfortunately his game ended halfway through the first half through an injury. Simonstown's pace and powerful running enabled them to create many chances. Ben Tracey and Shane Kiernan were the outlets for the start of each attacks but Simonstown's composure on the ball was poor in the first half. At half time the score line read Simonstown 0-8 Seneschalstown 1-4.

Simonstown had to contend with some dubious calls from the referee but the experience of some key players helped the Simonstown lads. The experience of Charlie McNulty, Paul Meade and Alan Meade was significant in the second half when Simonstown trailed by a point going into the last 5 minutes. Simonstown's Barry Fox and Brendan Quinn were excellent in the game and stopped many of Seneschalstown's attacks. The Meade brothers were able to win crucial kick outs during the game and it was Alan who took the bull by the horns scoring a remarkable individual goal. Simonstown's Andrew Kearney scored 7 of Simonstown's 13 points and was clinical from free kicks.

This dogged performance means that Simonstown are through to the quater final of the junior C championship. Best for Simonstown Brendan Quinn, Barry Fox, Alan Meade, Ben Tracey, Shane Kiernan.
