Wolfe Tones Report

Wolfe Tones 2-10 Dunboyne 1-14

Aided by the breeze in the first half Wolfe Tones made a very bright start and notched the first 3 points, Alan Fox and Caolán Ward from frees with Rossa Mc Donnell contributing from play. Dunboyne responded with 3 points to level the match before Patrick Caffrey added a point to stretch the Tones lead at the end of the first quarter.  Dunboyne levelled and then added a further point to lead 0 05 to 0 04 after 20 minutes. Tones however dominated the rest of the half and registered 4 further points 2 from Alan Fox (1 free) a 45 from Caolan Ward  and a pointed free from Sarán O Fionnagáin to lead by 3 at half time on a score line of 0  08 to 0  05. This 3 point lead hardly seemed enough given the strength of the breeze that would aid Dunboyne in the 2nd half. Tones would rue a couple of misses in this period as they had 2 wides and a goal attempt as Robert White attempted to slide the ball past the Dunboyne keeper but saw his effort saved.

Wolfe Tones got the ideal start to the second half as they worked the ball brilliantly out of defence and after a sweeping move Charlie Mc Garry finished to the net to open a six point gap. However Dunboyne didn't panic and had the next 5 scores. However they were again hit for a goal when Charlie Mc Garry brilliantly fielded a Cian O Neill centre to finish to the net to open a 4 point lead in the 42nd minute. Dunboyne put 2 more points on the board before Caolán Ward collected a quick free from Sarán O Fionnagáin to fire over. With just 5 minutes remaining the game turned when David Nolan the Tones keeper misjudged a Dunboyne centre and the ball ended up in the net. The teams were now level. Charlie Mc Garry nudged the Tones ahead but they were unable to hold on and Dunboyne added 2 further points and managed to hold on as Tones pressed hard for an equaliser.
