B FL Div 6: Two from two for Slane

April 21, 2017

Slane's Barry Carolan

Slane 2-12 Moylagh 3-05

Midweek Moylagh to Slane is a challenging journey when you are pushing for a 7.15 throw-in but in fairness to the North Meath men, they showed great commitment to their club and cause and made the long journey to Slane.

Slane again showed the same sluggish start that they showed in the first round in Kilmainhamwood and trailed 1-02 to the men in green before they registered a score. This score came from a point from play from Eanna Mooney and was briskly followed by a similar score from Jim Marry.

Not being deterred from their good start, Moylagh answered with two points of their own. Slane were pressing hard on the Moylagh goals at this point but constantly gave away easy ball and were careless in possession but Moylagh failed to make the most of their turnovers and the Slane pressure eventually resulted in a penalty which was dispatched to the net by Eanna Mooney. This gave the home side some confidence which resulted in two further points from Killian Gough and Danny Forde leaving the sides level at half time… half time score at Moylagh 1-04; Slane 1-04

Slane started sharp in the second half with Dermot Lynch registering the first score of the second half for the Boynesiders which was followed by a free from Eanna Mooney and a point from play from Danny Forde, but just as it looked like the home side would pull away, Moylagh broke through and scored a fine goal themselves. Barry Carolan was having an excellent game in the middle of the field for Slane and showed his years and experience at this juncture and drove the Slane lads forward which resulted in Barry himself latching on to a loose ball on the 21 yard line, driving forward and finding the corner of the MOylagh net. Barry also added a further point immediately afterwards.

Eanna Mooney then pointed another free before Moylagh rallied again and after some sloppy passing in defence from Slane, a dangerous ball landed in the square, the Slane Keeper Norbert Potomski came in for a very hard challenge from a Moylagh forward, the ball spilled and was toed to the Slane net again. The ref allowed the score stand and Moylagh smelling blood pushed on again and landed a follow-up point which drew the gap back to a single point in favour of Slane. The Slane lads had to concentrate now and they did and pushed on again with two points from play and two frees from Eanna Mooney after some good work from the Slane forwards.

Slane players who stood out on the night included Aarron Lane who had an excellent game at full back, Shane Traynor and Stephen Mongey in defence, Barry Carolan and Jim Marry who worked hard in the middle of the field and Killian Gough and Eanna Mooney up front. A good team effort all round.

Slane: Norbert Potomski, Shane Traynor, Aarron Lane, Liam White, Stephen Mongey, Kevin Reilly, Kevin Dunne, Barry Carolan 1-01; Jim Marry 0-1; Killian Gough 0-1; Eanna Mooney 1-06 (1 pen and 3 frees); Gareth Kealy; Daragh Johnson; Danny Forde 0-2; Johnnie Daly; Dermot Lynch 0-1; Jake Tallon and Gavin Mongey
