Trim 1-12 St Brigid's 2-9

Trim travelled to Ballinacree to play the local side in the fourth round of football A League on Sunday morning. Bereft of their two intercounty footballers, three intercounty hurlers, with four significant injuries and two other players tied to other sports the Trim expectations of a good outcome were certainly reduced as it was effectively a Junior B side playing the Junior A home side.

Nonetheless the Trim side put on a magnificent performance in the first half playing fast attacking football hitting eight points and with great defensive work held the home team to two points. Within the first ten minutes they were three points up with pointed frees from Daire Lynch and Robbie Kenny and a peach of a score from full forward Stephan Doyle from our in the right hand corner before St Brigids hit their first in the thirteenth minute. The following  ten minutes saw the Trim side forge ahead by six with points from  Stephan Doyle, a free Robbie Kenny and two from Daire Lynch, one free and one from play. The home side pulled one back in the twenty sixth minute and on the cusp of half time Trim's Corner back Patrick Lennon, after a long run up the field and participating in inter passing play hit an excellent point from forty meters to leave the half time score at 0-8 to 0-2. Significantly, just before half time Trim's Corner forward Daire Lynch, who had made a huge contribution in the first half, was red carded.

On the turnaround the Trim lads were fast out of the blocks with a goal and a point just after two minutes to leave a ten point gap. Ciaran Giblin hit the point and Stephan Doyle the goal.  Trim's centre back Ciaran Joyce then received a black card. He had been central to his back line's valiant defensive work in the first half. From this point on the home side, with good support behind them got the bit between their teeth and pulled themselves back into the game. From the fifth to the twentieth minute they hit 2-5 without reply to end up one point ahead with ten minutes to go. They were defending valiantly, winning all of the balls in the middle of the field and running at the Trim defence. A Brigids's penalty in the nineteenth minute was brilliantly parried down by Trim's goalie Niall Murray but his defenders committed a similar offence from the rebound. There was no mistake on second time of asking from the penalty taker. Trim regained parity in the twenty second minute with a point from centre forward Darryl Phelin but the home side kept up the offensive play with a pointtwo minutes later. James Cullen levelled proceedings again in the thirteenth minute with a point but the home side, not to be undone, went again on the charge and pointed in the thirty second minute to leave the visitors grasping for at least a draw and that they did when Robbie Kenny hit a last ditch free over the bar in the seventh minute of injury time to leave the final score evenly balanced at Trim 1-12, St Brigids 2-9.

St Brigids must be congratulated for their magnificent grounds comprising a majestic entrance, a fine club house overlooking their pitch, a training ground and athletics field. A wonderful setup from a border club that is obviously lucky to have enormous support from their local community.

From our club perspective it is always enviable to boast intercounty players which at present Trim have two on the Meath football team and three on the Meath hurling team. But it is also an unenviable situation that we do not have these players for league or cup games, case in point on Sunday last. The revamped fixtures plan by Coiste na Mhi this year have not helped the situation of intercounty player drain from a dual club such as Trim. Without these players It is very difficult to maintain any level of continuity in our club teams.
