FL Div 3: Strong second half showing seals win for Ultans

February 20, 2017

Ronan Galligan St Ultans

St Ultans 1-10 St Vincents 1-7

St Ultans secured both points in Sean Newman against last year's Junior B champions St Vincents on Sunday morning with a strong second half performance.

Ultans started brightly and opened the scoring with a long range free from Gearoid Rennicks. Both sides exchanged points then with Ronan Breslin and Ronan Galligan with scores from play for St Ultans. St Vincents finished the half strongly and a well finished goal left them in a strong position leading 1-4 to 3 at half time.

Some positional changes and introduction of substitute Conor Smyth for the start of the second half had a positive effect on St Ultans who began to covert posession into scores from a Mark Allen free and Darren Costello point. The major score of the 2nd half was a well worked goal that Ronan Breslin calmly finished low to the corner. St Vincents reacted positively to equalise. Darren Costello and Conor Smyth both pointed from play but Vincents cancelled out both scores.

Ultans were winning the battle around midfield and Ronan Galligan scored his 2nd from distance to edge Ultans into the lead, this time Vincents had no response and a brace of points from Mark Allen left 3 between the teams at the final whistle.

St Ultans league campaign continues away to Kilmainham on Sunday and supporters will be happy with work rate of players to grind out victory over a determined St Vincents team

St Vincents Report

On what was a mild yet damp February morning St. Vincent's GFC travelled to St Ultans in Sean Newman Park, Oldtown near Kells. This was their first division 3 league game of the season and both teams were eager to get started.

It was the home team who got of the mark in the second minute with a point from a free. St. Vincent's got their first score in the tenth minute with a well taken point from Declan O Sullivan. Vincents kept the pressure on throughout the first half and saw a lot of the ball which resulted in one goal and three points coming from Shane O Brien, Richie O Sullivan, Robbie Lynch and Bob Tallon.

St Vincents started the second half leading 1- 4 to 0-3 and it looked as they might kick on as they went on an immediate offensive but the resulting effort was wide. St. Ultans were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute and scored a point. This was followed by a goal and a point without reply from St. Vincent's. In the seventeenth minute Paddy Arnold scored a point from play but St Ultans began to shine and scored a further five points from play over the next fifteen minutes. Vincents kept pressing with two points scored from play but it wasn't enough on this occasion to catch the home team who won the game by three points.
