Trim 4-15, Kilmainham 0-5.
Trim Intermediate footballers commenced their 2017 A league season with an emphatic twenty two point victory over Kilmainham on Sunday morning last at St Lomans park.
Right from the throw in the result looked like that it would be a one sided affair. After the visitors hit two wides in the first two minutes the Trim side took over and scored freely arriving at the twenty second minute of the half ahead by fourteen points on a score of 2-8 to 0-0. The goals came from Michael Cullen and Nigel Duignan and the points from Alan Douglas (3), Cullen (2), Duignan (1), Owen McGrath (1) and Ciaran O'Rourke (1). Both sides hit one point a piece in the final six minutes of the half to leave the half time score at Trim 2-9 to Kilmaninham 0-1 with Trim corner back Patrick Lennon clocking Trim's final score. The return of Trim's Intercounty star Alan Douglas to his club affairs was significant. From his midfield position he controlled proceedings with his insatiable appetite for work, running at the opposition and spraying long passes to his inside forwards while firing over three points in the half.
After the turnaround, which in recent times proved to be Trim's weakest period of the game both sides swapped points and then the visitors hit three points on the trot showing signs of a recovery. But that was there last score of the game at the eleventh minute when the home side ratcheted up a couple of gears hitting an unanswered 2-5 in the final quarter of the game. To be fair to Kilmainham they tried valiantly to contain the home side but their attacks were thwarted by a solid defensive display from full back Luke Moran, Patrick Lennon, Declan Dowling and Ciaran O'Rourke. The visitors also struggled to contain the rampant Trim forwards who attacked in waves and at speed with Michael Cullen, Nigel Duignan and Darryl Phelin leading the charge.
