Sad passing of Skryne GFC stalwart Ray Mooney

January 18, 2017

Always a proud moment for the late Ray Mooney as he presents the Mooney Cup (named after his father Tommy) to Skryne captain David Rogan after the 2007 Meath Division 1 FL final.

Skryne GFC, and the wider Meath GAA community, has been plunged into sadness following the passing of club stalwart Ray Mooney yesterday.

The Mooney family name is synonymous with the club and the unassuming Ray served in a variety of capacities, always going about his business with a minimum of fuss.

A son of the legendary Tommy Mooney, after whom the A FL Division 1 silverware is named, Ray was very much part of the fabric of Skryne GFC since his school days and was practically an ever present on the club's executive committee.

He was an outstanding footballer during the sixties and seventies, winning a senior championship medal in 1965 while his two brothers, Tex and Gay, also donned the famed blue and white colours.

He also acted as a selector on numerous occasions and was coach to the senior championship winning Skryne teams of 1992 and 1993.

The retired St Patrick's CS teacher also played a significant role in the Moatlands school's emergence as a force to be reckoned on the gaelic football fields.

A resident of St Enda's Villas in Navan, Ray was one of four new club presidents elected at the recent AGM and his loss will be acutely felt around the club.
