FL Div 3: Brave effort but Drumconrath relegated

July 22, 2016

Drumconrath's Terry Skelly

Clann na nGael 2-12 Drumconrath 1-14

Drumconrath put up their best score of the year but fell just short of giving themselves a chance of a relegation playoff in this must win game. Drums now will compete in Division 4 in 2017.

After a close opening few minutes with Terry Skelly equalizing on 3 minutes after the visitors had opened the scoring.

Wind assisted Clann na nGael had the best of the 1st quarter and led 1-5 to 0-1 and indeed Drums could have conceded another few goals but for some good saves by Conor O'Halloran.

Jamie Myles got Drums going again and Eoin Martin fired to the net to narrow the gap to 3 points. Things got better as Daniel Byrne and Sean McMahon left the minimum between the sides. The Clann na nGael keeper was proving unerring on frees and soon they led by 4 points but late scores from Myles and Tomas Conlon left it 1-8 to 1-6 at the break.

Three quick fire points had Drumconrath ahead by the 33rd minute as Daniel Byrne, Chris Tighe and Pado Farrelly all pointed. The visitors leveled a minute later but Drumconrath got the next 3 points from a Byrne free, Myles and a long distance McMahon free.

The sides swapped points with the Clann keeper pointing and Conlon keeping three points in the game as the 3rd quarter end.

A disputed penalty on 38 minutes level the game and soon after the visitors took the lead. The scoring dried up and when Terry Skelly pointed on 58 minutes it was the 1st score in over 15 minutes. A late free edged Clann na nGael ahead again and while Drumconrath won a late free a goal was needed and Skelly's shot was deflected out for a 45 which came to nought as the final whistled sounded.
