ST. MICHAELS MATCH REPORT

St. Michaels 0-15, Walterstown 1-9

A severely depleted St. Michaels side pulled themselves off bottom place with this deserving victory and first win of their division 2 league campaign in Carlanstown on Sunday afternoon.

The ease of victory was even greater than the scoreline would suggest, as a late goal in injury time was a mere consolation for Walterstown who fell apart in the second half as St. Michaels had pulled away at a canter.

The game opened promisingly for the visitors as they built up a 0-4 to nil scoreline after only eight minutes, the hard working Kevin Cassidy opened the St. Michaels account with a point on nine minutes, his cousin Ronan followed up with a great effort from play. Walterstown made it 0-5 to 0-2 by the end of the opening quarter and were taking the game to St. Michaels, but the home side dusted themselves down to tag on the next four points without reply, the first from a Kevin Cassidy free following a foul on Chris Drew, then one each from Ray Reilly, Peter O'Connell and Ben Tobin to put the home side one point to the good. Walterstown levelled matters on the stroke of half time but Chris Drew still managed to squeeze one in before referee Liam Reddy blew the half time whistle with St. Michaels leading 0-7 to 0-6.

The midfield duo of Peter O'Connell and Davy Lynch put in a storming second half display as they popped up all over the pitch and between them they registered three of the home sides opening four points of the second half with Ben Tobin floating over a free kick. Ray Reilly followed with a long ball into the square which had to be deflected over the cross-bar by the Walterstown defence to prevent a goal. The visitors only opened their second half account with a converted '45 on 46 minutes. A one-two between Kevin Cassidy and Reilly resulted in another Cassidy point, Tobin was on target again with a excellent effort from a free kick from an acute angle along the side-line to leave it double scores at 0-14 to 0-7 as the game entered the final 5 minutes. Walterstown sent two over, one from a free before substitute Darren O'Connell who came in for the injured Kevin Cassidy sent over a super effort from 40 yards out. The visitors found the back of the net in injury time to reduce the deficit to three points, but it was too little, too late.

Along with the scorers others to perform well were J.B. O'Reilly, Paddy Clarke and Joe Martin.
