FL Div 4: Slane 'put it up' to Ballivor

BALLIVOR 1-12 SLANE 2-5

Slane made the midweek dash to Ballivor on Wednesday evening to play out a hard hitting and competitive game.

Slane took to the field missing a number of players but this is a sign of how far they have come as they could still put it up to their intermediate opponents for the majority of the match.

It was Slane that looked the sharper from the off as they recorded the first point of the game after 6 minutes through centre forward Padraig McGowan.  The away side continued their dominance and when a fine through ball was put in front of Mattie McClean he calmly prodded it past the on rushing Ballivor net minder to put Slane 4 points in front.  Slane further increased their lead from the ever impressive McGowan as he finished off a great team move.  Slane then allowed Ballivor back into the game as they switched off and allowed a long ball in behind their defence before the Ballivor corner forward coolly finished to the back of the net.  This rattled the Boynesiders and Ballivor pushed on and tagged on two unanswered points to push them a point ahead.  Slane regrouped and well taken free from McGowan levelled matters before Ballivor replied with a free of their own just on the stroke of half time.

Half Time: Ballivor 1-3 Slane 1-2

The second half started with the home side in complete control as they added on 5 points to their tally.  It took until the 9th minute of the half for Slane to get on the scoreboard as half forward Gareth Kealy swung over a fine point from a tight angle.  Slane grew back into the game at this point and after a high ball was put in around the square, Kevin Reilly latched onto the break and he swivelled and found the bottom corner of the net to bring Slane right back into contention.  Ballivor settled themselves and replied with two fine taken scores before a 5-minute spell of hard hitting football played out around the middle of the field.  Finally, as the dust settled, Slane emerged with the ball and after being brought down, McGowan converted an excellent free to give Slane hope once again.  Less than 30 seconds later and after great fielding by Alan Harding, McGowan added another fine score to his tally with a brilliant score from the outside of his left boot.  Slane were on top as the home side retreated to defend their lead but they just couldn't find the points they need to close the gap.  Slane had the chances and were very unlucky with two quickly taken frees. The home sides experience game through as they defended well before adding two extra points on the break.

Next up for Slane is another trip to South Meath on Sunday morning as they face Boardsmill in the ACFL at 11am.
