HL Div 3: Dunderry hold on for win

This local derby in Rd 3 of the A.H.L was played Monday night in windy and bitterly cold conditions.

Dunderry were coming off a heavy defeat from Ratoath in the last round and were looking for a confidence boosting performance. Davy Gilkeson got his eye in quickly with a free in the 2nd minute quickly followed by points from Conor Farrell, John Moran and Dylan Keenan to open up a 0-0 to 0-4 score line. The home side came back with 3 unanswered points but Moran registered his 2nd point and Gilkeson knocked over a fine long range free in the 13th minute followed by a point from Stephen Coogan in the 14th minute following good work from Brendan Wright and Conor Dempsey. The defence for Dunderry were superb marshalled by Evan Stephens with his brother Davy and Aron Feeney either side of him then Mickey Dowdall, Wright and Davy McCormack were outstanding in the half back line. Gilkeson continued his class in free taking with scores in the 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th minutes to leave the halftime score 0-5 to 0-11.

The 2nd half saw Kilmessan come out fast scoring 4 unanswered points leaving 2 between the teams. Dunderry's defence was under severe scrutiny as Kilmessan look to take the lead but the Stephens brothers Feeney, Dowdall, Wright and McCormack chased hassled and put their bodies on the line to block anything looking dangerous. In the 46th minute Dunderry got their first score of the 2nd half with a superb Gilkeson point, Jordan Martin entered the game replacing Alex  Walsh in the 48th minute. In the 51st minute Dowdall won a breaking ball and found Gilkeson out on the far touchline he quickly switched play back to Martin on the dug out touchline in lots of space and calmly slotted over a match winning point. Dunderry held their nerve and finished out the game to win by a single point.
