The Hastings Cup will be cut to eight counties

The number of teams competing in next year's Hastings Cup U21 football competition is set to be halved.

Sixteen counties took part in last season's competition, but no more than eight teams will be able to enter next year. These teams are expected to be drawn from the competition's traditional midland base. The Hastings Cup, which is run off in the month of January, has become increasingly popular in recent years with counties using it as preparation for the U21 championship.

Roscommon are the current holders, having defeated Galway in last season's final on a 2-21 to 1-11 scoreline.
