Cumann Na mBunscol Finals: Match reports

Plenty of colour and excitement at Day 1 of the schools finals

Once again, despite the persistant rain, large crowds decended on Pairc Tailteann to witness some outstanding football on Day 1 of the Allianz Meath Cumann Na mBunscol Football Finals. 

They were six finals down for decision.

Boys Division 4 Final: Baconstown hold on

Baconstown National School claimed the Allianz Meath Cumann Na mBunscol Boys Division 4 Football title with this narrow victory over Castletown. 

Baconstown 2-3 Castletown 1-5

This was the first game on a six card programme and proceeding got under way at 9.30 at a very wet Pairc Tailteann.

Castletown had their fair share of possession in the opening half but it was Baconstown that held a comfortable 2-2 to 1-0 interval lead. Mark Murphy and Rachel Forde got the winners goals while the impressive Aron Monaghan got Castletown lone first half score.

The boys in Green and Gold dominated the second half. Points from Monaghan, Killian Smyth (2) and a great effort from Conor Price narrowed the gap to the minimum. Baconstown broke up field and Cole Flynn pointed to open up a two point gap. With time running out Smyth pointed again but Castletown could not find the levelling score and Baconstown made home with the title.

After the game Rory Fagan was presented with the Boys Division 4 Cup.

Boys Division 2 Final: Lismullen take Division 2 honours

Lismullen claimed their fourth Boys Division 2 crown with this four point win over Kentstown in the second final of the day.

Lismullen NS 3-6 Kentstown NS 2-5

The game was only five minutes on when both number 14's Darragh Cantwell (Kentstown) and Lismullen's Lee Cahill raised green flags. Ciaran Cox was on hand to finish to the Kentstown net after Adam Murphy free kick dropped short and Lismullen went in at the break 2-3 to 1-3 ahead.

The very impressive Donal Commons kicked his fourth point of the game after ten minutes of the second half to leave a three points between the teams 2-5 to 1-5 and soon after Darragh Campbell got his second goal to tie up the game. But Lismullen found an extra gear. Ciaran Cox got in for his second major and Troy Campbell raised his fourth white flag to seal a great victory for the boys in Black and White.

Girls Division 2 Final: Fabulous double for Lismullen

The girls of Lismullen completed an historic double for the school by beating Gaelscoil Eanna to claim the Division 2 football title in the third game of the day.

Lismullen 2-3 Gaelscoil Eanna 0-5

Thanks to a Lisa O'Neill goal and a point from Alba Mullen the winners raced in to a  1-1 to 0-0 lead after ten minutes. Gaelscoil Eanna eventually got of the mark with a Niamh Nic Aonghusa point. The same player added a second mintes late as Lismullen went in at the break 1-1 to 02 ahead.

The second half was another even affair. O'Neill got a second goal. Gaelscoil needed a goal but could not find a way through a determined Lismullen defence and had to settle for points through Sorcha de Paor (2) and substitute Abi Ni Fhaoghain.

In the end it was Lismullen who claimed their first title since 2006 to complete a great double. After the game team captain Jernnifer Lynch was presented with the Division 2 Cup.

Girls Division 5 Final: Rathmore retain crown

For the second year running Rathmore have claimed the Girls Division 5 title.

Rathmore 4-2 Mount Hanover 1-3

There was never really any doubt where the destination of the cup would go. The holders were 3-1 to 0-1 ahead at the break. Aoibhe Walsh raised the green flag twice in the opening ten minutes. Team captain Roisin Canny added a point. Mount Hanover got off the mark with a Ellen Brodigan point but Ella O'Toole closed out the half with a fine goal to give Rathmore a nine point interval lead.

Mount Hanover came more in to the game in the second half and were rewarded with 1-1 from Amy Callaghan and a point from Brodigan. Walsh completed her hat trick and the cup was heading back to Rathmore.

Girls Division 1 Final: Dunboyne and Cannistown will meet again

Dunboyne and Cannistown will have to do it all over again to decide the destination of the Girls Division 1 football title after this highly entertaining draw at Pairc Tailteann.

Dunboyne 3-2 Cannistown 3-2

In a very even opening half Cannistown held a narrow 2-2 to 2-1 lead at the end of the 25 minutes. Ciara Blake and Orlaith Mallon accounted for the Cannistown goals. Dunboyne captain Rachael Kane lead the way for her team with two fine first half goals.

Cannistown extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Emma Byrne got in for a well worked goal. This proved to be the Black and Ambers only score of the half and for long periods it looked like they could hold on for victory. Katie Crehan added a point for Dunboyne to leave it 3-2 to 2-2. Dunboyne now dominating possession needed a goal and Kane duly obliged to earn her team a draw.

The replay will take place next Saturday at the same venue

Boys Division 3 Final: First title for Bohermeen since 2006

Bohermeen claimed their first Cumann na mBunscol title since 2002 with this hard fought two point win over Rathbeggan in the last game of the day at Meath headquarters.

Bohermeen 2-4 Rathbeggan 1-5

The winners held a three point advantage at the break. Team captain Michael Hilliard took the scoring honours in the opening 25 minutes accounting for 1-2 of the Bohermeen total. Rathbeggan's Jared Rushe sent over two fine points while defender Scott Feldman kicked the first of his two fine points but James Brennan's and Mary Coyne's charges held a 1-3 to 0-3 interval lead.

Conor Whelan extended the winners lead in the opening minutes of the second half with a their second goal. Rathbeggan began to dominate after this and were rewarded when Fionn Drummond found the back of the Bohermeen net to leave a point between the teams 2-3 to 1-5. Bohermeens nerves were settled when Ryan Hegarty sent over a point in the closing minutes to seal a memorable victory.
