MFC: Simonstown stun Wolfe Tones

Thomas O'Reilly Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 1-15 Simonstown Gaels  4-9 (after extra time)

Wolfe Tones seemed to have the game won when leading by 10 points with just 3 minutes of normal time remaining as Tones had been in control throughout the game and after a solid opening period led by half time 0-8 to 1-1.

Tones' domination continued in to the second half and they were boosted by a Charlie Mc Garry goal following good work from Éanna O Kelly Lynch in the 33rd minute. They built on this score and heading into the dying minutes held a 1-14 to 1-4 lead.

However in an amazing turn around Simontown rattled in 3 goals in as many minutes to trail by 1 point as the final whistle loomed. However a free kick from all of 50 metres gave them the score they needed to force the game into extra time.

Simonstown  Gaels now had momentum and added 4 points in the first period of extra time to a solitary point from the Tones. With just 5 minutes remaining the game was held up as an ambulance was called following a leg injury to Tones' player Oisín Mac Ghinneartaí. In the remaining period after the lengthy delay neither team managed to add to their tally as Tones came in search of the goal that would earn them a replay.
