September 22, 2015

Slane's Podge McGowan

Slane 3-14
Gaeil Colmcille 3-06

Slane minor team played Gaeil Colmcille in the second round of the minor championship on Sunday night in Slane.

This fixture followed a fine performance and victory for Slane over Rathkenny the previous week. This game again was played in wet conditions and again was a competitive affair. The home side started very positively and raced into an early lead scoring 2-03 before the Kells side registered their first score. This score settled the men in red and white and they managed a further 1-02 before Slane steadied themselves once more. This came in the form of two fine points from Slanes Padraig McGowan. The game was fast and competitive at this stage as both sides battled for control but unfortunately one Kells player went a step too far and was handed a straight red card for striking reducing Gael Colmcille to 14 players. This did not deter the visitors and they continued to compete throughout the game. Slane managed a further 1-02 before the halftime whistle and conceded a point bringing the half time score in at Slane 3-07 ; Gael Colmcille 1-05.

Slane's midfield pairing of Daniel Forde and Matt Tully were in terrific form in the centre of the park contesting every ball with the big men from Kells and Padraig McGowan and Eanna Mooney were feeding well off  the breaking ball with some great support play from Francie Marry and Killian Gough and Norbert Potomski and Ralph McGuinness were also working well on the full forward line. Captain Eoin Gibbs led by example throughout, driving forward at every opprotunity from centre back and providing great example to youngsters Peter Martyn and Jake Tallon either side of him. The experienced back four of Darren Berrill in goals and Liam White, Finn Searle and Tadhg Moloney were also presenting great difficulty for the Kells forwards.

Kells got the first score of the second half and this was answered by a fine score from Slane's Peter Martyn. Slane managed a further 6 points in this second half with Daniel Forde taking an excellent score to round things off for Slane on the evening. Kells stayed in the game and pushed for goals towards the end of the game and did get some reward hitting the Slane net twice but it was just a journey too far for the 14 man Kells side who battled valiantly throughout. Slane also introduced Luke Gibbs, Marius Galligan and Johnnie Daly into the game in the second half with all three players performing well.
