MFC: Na Fianna Edge out St Oliver's

Na Fianna recorded a MFC Div 2 round two win over St Oliver's in Enfield on Sunday morning in a hard fought encounter watched by a sizeable crowd who were treated to a game that went down to the wire.

St Oliver's started the strongest, netting an early goal and a point. The home side responded with a Shane Walsh goal but were pegged back by three points from the visitors. Centre forward Peter Slevin burst through the centre to bury low to the net to keep Na Fianna in touch. Mark Slevin, Ethan Devine and Glen McDonnell added further points which were responded to with two points from the away side. A Shane Walsh free and a point from play by Jack McNally saw Na Fianna lead by 2-05 to 1-05 at half time.

Na Fianna were outscored in a tense second half by 0-5 top 0-4 as they visitors tried in vain to snatch something from the game. Oliver's drew level with the opening three points before another Walsh free and a fine effort from Jack McNally put Na Fianna back on top. Oliver's pointed again before Mark Slevin responded with a fantastic point from an acute angle.

The away side hit back with a point to leave the score 2-08 to 1-10 and followed up with three wides in a row as they attacked the home side.  Some great defensive play from Sean Rafferty kept the visitors at bay while Cian Slattery made some outstanding catches at midfield as both sides fought bravely. A break up the pitch in injury time helped Ethan Devine to surge through on goal and take his point to wrap up a great win for Na Fianna.
