Ladies Preview: Can Seneschalstown retain the title

September 02, 2015

Shauna Bennett - St Ultans

It has been an extremely busy Championship season thus far and that shows no signs of stopping.

On Wednesday evening, Navan O'Mahonys will take on Simonstown in Bective in their refixed round seven game. The victors of this local derby will secure Senior status for 2016 while the loser will take on Na Fianna in the relegation play-off to see who will be relegated to the Intermediate Champ for next season.

Next Sunday 6th however promises to be action packed with four semi-finals down for decision.

In the Senior Championship, a double header in Simonstown will decide who qualifies for this year's Final.

First up is the meeting of Boardsmill and St. Ultans. When they met two weeks ago in Round Six, St. Ultans recorded a comfortable 4-11 to 1-04 win, however there is no doubt that this semi-final will be a lot closer. Boardsmill will have their tails up going into this semi-final after they defeated Seneschalstown last time out, winning by 1-13 to 1-06.

Getting off to a good start and being strong defensively will be crucial for the 'Mill girls if they are to smother the threat of the Ultans attack. St. Ultans were roundly beaten by Oldcastle in their final round game last week, losing out by 3-11 to 0-03, however it was their first loss of their Championship campaign and they will be thirsty for victory next Sunday with the lure of a Championship final for the victors.

The second semi-final in Simonstown next Sunday morning sees Oldcastle do battle with last year's Champions, Seneschalstown at 1.15. The two sides met in the opening round of the Championship with the North Meath side recording a substantial 5-14 to 0-10 win over Seneschalstown.

This defeat seemed to do wonders for the Yellow Furze side as they went on a winning streak thereafter, recording victories over Simonstown, Na Fianna and Navan O'Mahonys. Defeat to St. Ultans and Boardsmill in the final two rounds will leave the Phonsie Gilsenan managed side hungry for victory and eager to book their place in the final.

Oldcastle have shown huge hunger this year for the Championship, not least in the final round when they shipped a big defeat over St. Ultans to secure top spot in the Senior table.

They will go into this semi-final determined to come away with a win, and book a place in their first ever Senior final on September 19th.
