Summerhill's Ross Tallon

Junior A Championship Round 5

Summerhill qualified for the Junior A quarter-finals with a six point win against Dunsany in a game play in very wet conditions in Trim on Sunday.

Summerhill opened brightly with a point from Conor Lyons following good work by Cathal Byrne but Dunsany hit back with four points in a row to lead by three. Summerhill had a good goal chance when a long dropping ball was punched first time by Cathal Byrne just over the bar. This was soon followed by an Eamonn Ryan point.

Summerhill then scored their first goal from a Conor Lyons penalty following a foul on Byrne in the 18th minute of the half. Soon after Summerhill nearly added a second goal when a goal bound effort by Eamonn Ryan was deflected over the bar by the Dunsany keeper. Dunsany responded well with three points from play before the half was closed out by another Ryan point an one from Gary Rispin. On the stroke of half time Summerhills keeper Robbie McDonnell had to be a at his best to make a good save to leave the half time score 1-6 to 0-7 in favour of Summerhill.

As the rain continued to fall, Dunsany opened the scoring in the second half with a point within thirty seconds of the restart to cut the deficit to a single point. In the 5th minute of the half Summerhill struck for their second goal. Cathal Byrne managed to find the net after a scramble in front of the Dunsany goal. The goal was followed by two more Summerhill points from a Conor Lyons free and a great Eamonn Ryan effort from play.

Trailing by six point Dunsany threw everything at Summerhill in search of scores but the Summerhill defence, especially the full back line of Jack Davis, Eoghan Jennings and Jack Payne held firm. Dunsany despite having a lot of possession could only manage one more pointed free before the match ended. The game was effectively ended as a contest when Dunsany were reduced to fourteen when one of their players was sent off after picking up a second yellow card with eight  minutes remaining.

The scoring was completed by another Eamonn Ryan point to leave the full time score 2-9 to 0-9 in favour of Summerhill. Summerhill now go on to meet Carnaross in the quarter finals in a few weeks' time.
