FL Div 3: Promotion for Meath Hill

July 20, 2015

Meath Hill's Ian Malone

Meath Hill 1-14   Ballinabrackey 1-07

Meath Hill secured promotion into Division 2 of the Meath all county A leagues for the first time in 25 years with a vital 7 point victory over Ballinabrackey on Sunday.

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and opened the scoring shortly after the fifth minute. Chris Yorke got Meath Hill's first score with a free to leave the sides level but it was the Brack's who pushed on and they were unlucky not to find the net twice but they were denied by Dominic Yorke on both occasions but they did keep the score board ticking over with some accurate free taking.

Ian Malone and Yorke fired over points from play to keep Meath Hill in touch before Meath player Damien Carroll scored the first goal of the game with a low finish into the net. Another Yorke free finished the scoring for the first half to leave the score 1-05 to 0-04 at half time.

Meath Hill started the second half brightest with Mark Tully and Ian Malone getting points early on to narrow the gap. Danny Quinn kicked Ballinabrackey's first score of the second half before pointed free's from Chris Yorke and Ian Malone left just one point between the teams.

A Chris Yorke point from play drew the side's level before Ian Malone put Meath Hill ahead for the first time in the game. Damien Carroll drew the south Meath side level with a free off the ground from a tight angle.  Mark Tully put Meath Hill ahead again with a point on the turn before Jason Yorke got his first score with a fine point from a narrow angle to put two points between the teams. Then came the score that would finally put daylight between the sides as Tomas Smith intercepted a short kick-out to race through and finish high into the net, Ian Malone then scored his fifth point with a free from a narrow angle and Pierce McGrath finished the scoring with a good score from distance.

Meath Hill can be very happy with their display with great defending throughout from Conor Marry and Damien Turley and in attack Ian Malone and Chris Yorke showed well. But this was an overall team display that helped Meath Hill get promoted to division 2 outscoring their opponents 1-10 to 0-2 in the second half.

The two sides will now meet again in the league final which should be an intriguing encounter.
