County Chairmen clash

July 07, 2015

Meath County Board Chairman Conor Tormey with Barney Allen

There were sharp exchanges between former chairman Barney Allen and his successor Conor Tormey over the proposed laying-off of two female members of the Pairc Tailteann staff at the July meeting of the County Committee in Dunboyne on Monday night.

Allen wished to acknowledge work done by the two people in question, both of whom had been in the positions for a number of years, stating that the delegates were entitled to know what is happening.

However, Tormey and treasurer Brendan Dempsey both said that the matter should not be discussed at the meeting with the latter remarking, "we don't want a public forum here"

"Delegates should have confidence in the management committee, bringing up the matter here is not appropriate," added the treasurer.

There is some annoyance that the two workers were informed of the proposal to relieve them of their positions by Central Council and Leinster Council personnel rather than a representative of the County Committee.

Tormey said the national and provincial bodies have been asked to review the matter, adding, "it's not about me and you, it's about what's best for the Meath GAA."
