Ladies IFC: First points for St Michaels

Donaghmore Ashbourne's Grainne Field closes in on Sharon Callaghan St Michaels during the Meath ladies IFC game at Carlanstown

St. Michaels 6-16, Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-8

St. Michaels ladies put their opening round defeat to Dee Ranger behind them when they served up a splendid team display to overcome a spirited Donaghmore Ashbourne side in an entertaining match played in Carlanstown on Tuesday evening.                                                                                                                            St. Michaels dominated matters from the throw-in and went a point up after only 33 seconds and by the end of the first quarter were 1-5 to 0-1 to the good after Sinéad McCormack and Seona Lynch 0-2 each, Marion Farrelly 0-1 and a goal from Megan O'Brien on 7 minutes. Donaghmore Ashbourne also raised a green flag on 24 minutes after their free kick sailed past a packed St. Michaels goalmouth to the back of the net, but the home side hit back immediately with O'Brien 0-1, McCormack and Farrelly 0-2 apiece and Aisleen Regan 0-1 to put their side into a commanding position at the break, leading 1-11 to 1-2.  

The second half continued in the same vein as the first as St. Michaels hit the ground running and were 3-14 to 1-4 ahead by the end of the third quarter. Marion Farrelly 1-0 and Sharon Callaghan 2-0 were on target in those opening minutes with Seona Lynch and Regan also firing over superb points from play. Donaghmore Ashbourne enjoyed their best spell mid way through the final quarter when they added 5 points on the trot but the home side regained their composure and raised three more green flags through Sharon Callaghan, Alicia Curtis and Edwina Olwill to seal the victory.

For St. Michaels this was a 100% improvement on their previous outing with Sinéad McCormack excelling in a variety of roles all over the pitch and along with the scorers others to stand out were Áine Sheridan, Hayley Doyle, Mary Clinton and Laura Duignan.
