MFL 1 final: Brilliant Tones take title

July 01, 2015

Locked. Cian O'Neill Wolfe Tones and Danny McMahon St Colmcilles get in a tangle during the MFL Division 1 final at Pairc Tailteann.

Wolfe Tones 0-19 St Colmcilles 0-8

Wolfe Tones made a blistering start to this Division 1 final played  on a balmy evening in Pairc Tailteann and by the end of the first quarter led by 0-7 points to 0-1, the scores coming from Daniel O'Neill after a surging run from within his own half, 2 from Thomas O'Reilly, 2 from Saran O'Fionnagáin and 1 each from Seán Carr and Caolán Ward.

Saran O'Fionnagain was a handful all night

Everything was going right for the Tones and they amassed the 7 points without registering a wide. Daniel O'Neill and Charlie McGarry were dominant in midfield which generated a supply of ball to the forward line which was being well used by a very mobile Wolfe Tones forward unit in which Saran O'Fionnagáin, Éanna O'Kelly Lynch and O'Reilly were very prominent. St Colmcilles rallied in the 2nd quarter and with James Conlon prominent managed 5 points before the break, while Sarán O'Fionnagáin and O'Kelly Lynch replied for the Tones.

Half time score: Wolfe Tones 0-10 St Colmcilles 0-6.

St Colmcillles even though outplayed for much of the first half were back in contention but their hopes were dashed as Tones made a much better start to the second half and thanks to scores from Thomas Blaney, Éanna O'Kelly Lynch Thomas O'Reilly and Caolan Ward led by 0-14 to 0-07 after 37 minutes. St Colmcilles needed a spark but couldn't find it and only managed 2 further points before the end against a very hard working Tones side who won most of the 50/50 battles throughout.

Matthew Melady worked his socks off for the Tones cause

This was a magnificent team performance from the Tones even though short regulars Padraic Diamond, Luke Condi and Robert White, and was marked by great support play, high concentration levels and ferocious tackling which overturned the result of the Under 16 final contested by these sides 2 years ago.
