BFL3: Ultan's and Syddan draw

July 01, 2015

St Ultan's Stephen Quirke

St. Ultan's  0-10 Syddan  0-10

St. Ultan's and Syddan played out a low scoring draw in this B-League fixture, played in warm but cloudy conditions in Seán Newman Páirc.

The game was notable for the adult debuts of Darren Kavanagh, Declan Ball and Mikey Buchanan, all of whom would make an impact off the bench. The game started with Syddan cleaning up a potential goal chance at one end, and earning a free to open the scoring at the other. The Ultan's then spurned a second goal chance, as the Syddan goalkeeper stood up well to parry after good interplay between Stephen Quirke and Cian Dolan. Darren Costello opened the home side's account with a fine point from his midfield berth, but a number of wides from Ultan's forwards followed to ensure possession was not capitalised upon. Syddan kept in touch with a free and a well taken point from play after scrappy attempts to clear the ball out of the home defence. The home side managed to find rhythm through the midfield dominance of Paul Murray, and points from Stephen Quirke, Conor Smyth, Conor Martin, Darren Costello and Liam Carey all resulted from this control of the middle third. Unfortunately the home side were struck with an injury prior to the half time whistle, veteran Rob Duffy being replaced by debutant Darren Kavanagh. The half time score was St. Ultan's 0-07 - 0-04 Syddan.

The story of the early second half was one of wasted chances for both sides, with Syddan increasingly coming back into the game. A point from a 45 and another from a free saw them close the gap, as Ultan's centre-half back Shane Dolan was black carded by the referee and replaced by Declan Ball. Darren Kavanagh led the charge to put the home side back in the driving seat with a point from play but Syddan responded with two points of their own. With the Bohermeen men a point down, substitute Mikey Buchanan created a yard of space for himself before firing over to level the match. Despite the best efforts of defenders Shane Mulroe and Declan Ball, Syddan managed to grab a late score to put themselves in with a great chance of winning. However, a tricky late free from Stephen Quirke levelled the match at 10 points each and both sides had to be satisfied with a draw.

St. Ultan's: Cian Farnan, Jack Murray, Jamie Coogan, Shane Mulroe, Conor Martin 0-1, Shane Dolan, Greg McKeever, Darren Costello 0-02, Paul Murray, Conor Smyth 0-1, Rob Duffy, Conor Rennicks, Liam Carey 0-1, Stephen Quirke 0-03 (2f), Cian Dolan. Subs: Darren Kavanagh 0-1 for Rob Duffy, Declan Ball for Shane Dolan, Mikey Buchanan 0-1 for Conor Martin, Donal Gavigan for Cian Dolan.

B League Division 3

SYDDAN 0-10

ST ULTAN'S 0-10

A POINT from a free in the third minute of added time denied Syddan a precious victory in Division 3 of the B League at Sean Newman Park, Bohermeen.

The visitors had edged in front when substitute Fiachra Ross shot over in the 59th minute but they were unable to hold on for the win that would have left them sharing pole position in the table.

Graham Garland, Michael Fedigan, Cathal Dardis and Dylan Smyth were on target for Syddan in the opening half but at the break it was St Ultan's who led 0-7 to 0-4.

The introduction of Conor Dillon sparked a revival in the second half as Syddan were level at 0-7 each by the 49th minute.

Dillon's fourth point edged Syddan ahead but St Ultan's fought back twice in the closing stages to draw level.
