SHC: Killyon outclass Rathmolyon

Killyon's Ray Massey

Killyon rebooted their SHC Group B campaign with a big win over Rathmolyon in favourable conditions at Boardsmill on Friday evening.

Killyon ........... 2-25
Rathmolyon ..... 1-9

Having lost to Kildalkey by a point in round one, significant scoring yields in the second and third quarter ensured a first win of the campaign for Declan Mullen's men.

All six forwards scored from play for Killyon with Ray Massey and Keith Keoghan seven points each from play and frees. 2-17 of the winners' tally came from play while Rathmolyon managed  1-1 in the same manner.

David Raleigh top scored from play for Killyon with 1-4 and some of his scores were quality efforts. Rathmolyon - who lost to promoted Dunderry first time out - had the game's top scorer in Gary Doherty with 0-8, from placed balls.

Following Raleigh's first minute point, Killyon led to the end. In the 20th minute one-time county senior 'keeper Stephen Quinn made an excellent reflex save from Rathmolyon's Dylan Douglas.

A goal would have levelled matters at 1-3 to 0-6. Instead, Killyon moved play upfield and Stephen Kelly pointed. By half-time the team in red and green added another eight points and led by 0-15 to 0-6.

But for the efforts of goalkeeper Joe Gantley and some key interventions by defenders Aaron Fagan and David Mulligan, Rathmolyon would have been further in arrears.

Maintaining the momentum built up in the run-in to the break, Killyon widened the gap from the resumption with goals from Stephen Kelly and David Raleigh crowning a surge that yielded 2-5 without reply in 10 minutes.

Mike Cole didn't have the impact he had for Rathmolyon in previous campaigns over the last quarter of a century. Having toiled on both wings of the attack he saw out the hour.

Gary Doherty accounted for all but two scores of Rathmolyon's tally. Tommy Lynch landed a point from play and assisted in Tom Henderson's 44th minute goal that left it 2-20 to 1-6.

Both 'keepers were pressed into service in the final quarter when Killyon outscored Rathmolyon by 0-5 to 0-3. An excellent fetch by Killyon full-back Brian Perry was another feature of this phase of the game.

Killyon are set to face Dunderry in round three while Rathmolyon take on Blackhall Gaels.
