Meath Hill 2-14
Summerhill 0-14
Meath Hill put in a strong performance to overcome Summerhill in the junior football championship on Saturday evening.
Jason Yorke got Meath Hill's first score with a fine left footed point before Summerhill took control to go 4 point to 1 ahead after 10 minutes. Mark Tully was unlucky to see his shot for goal hit the crossbar just before a Chris Yorke 45 and a fine 50 metre free narrowed the score. Then came the minute that would ultimately win the game for Meath Hill, Chris Yorke finished the ball low into the net following a strong run and lay off from mid-fielder Keith Ginnitty and from the resultant kick out Jason Yorke caught the ball and raced through before laying the ball off to Pierce McGrath who finished the ball calmly into the corner of the net. McGrath then added to his tally with a free before Jason Yorke got his second score of the game before Meath Hill closed out their first half scoring with a Chris Yorke point from a narrow angle and a Pierce McGrath free to leave the score 2-07 to 0-08 at half time.
The second half was a much more even affair with Meath Hill defending well and scoring on the break. Mark Tully got Meath Hill's first score with a good score from play following a good pass from Jason Yorke. Ryan Owens then denied Summerhill a certain goal with a heroic block from the ground. Derek McMahon, Jason Yorke and Ian Malone added scores from play to add to Meath Hill's tally before Pierce McGrath added to his personal tally with a good free from a narrow angle. Summerhill did narrow the score to 5 points but good defending from Damien Turley, Keith Ginnitty, James Mooney and Barry Kieran kept them at bay as they searched for a goal. A fine Malone point from play kept Meath Hill out in front before he finished the scoring with a late free to leave the score at 2-14 to 0-14. Meath Hill can be very happy with this performance, an all-round team display with stout defending and the ability to take scores at the right times proving pivotal to the outcome of the game.
