Dunshaughlin 2-07
Dunboyne 2-10
A blistering start by Dunshaughln in the first 14 mins of their opening Junior A match of the year against local rivals Dunboyne saw them 10 points to the good in this rescheduled match played in Simonstown on Sunday evening.
The opening point of the game came from veteran sharp shooter Marin Reilly in the first minute with the mercurial Stephen Ward getting the first goal of the game 1 minute after a fine save from Dunshaughlin goalie Jimmy Kelliher seen Dunshaughlin get off to a dream start. Niall Byrne was causing the Dunboyne fullback line all sorts of problems and his persistence was rewarded with him getting his first score of the game after 5 mins. Dunboyne were guilty of missing some scoreable points with the opposite being the case for Dunshaughlin when after 7 minutes Niall Byrne found the back of the Dunboyne net to have Dunshaughlin in a very good position. A converted James Rattigan free and a fine point from Ronan Geraghty meant it was all Dunshaughlin but a score from Dunboyne finally saw them get off the mark after 14 mins. Another point from Dunboyne 2 minutes later seemed to give them confidence before a Dunboyne penalty was expertly saved by Dunshaughlin goalkeeper Jimmy Kelliher but unfortunately for Dunshaughlin the ball found the back of the net from the rebound. Dunshaughlin did show some great character with a fine Martin Reilly score following some great corner back play from Paul Walsh and a Diarmuid Christie Point on 25 points seen them bounce back however Dunboyne finished the half strongly with two more points saw Dunshaughlin leading by 5 points at the break.
It was all Dunboyne as the second half started with them accounting for 1-02 in the first 8 minutes with the pendulum now starting to swing in their favour. Dunshaughlin seemed to run out of steam with their only score of the second half coming from a converted Martin Reilly free with Dunboyne showing great character to get some scores on the board to run out by 3 points winners. Dunshaughlin will be bitterly disappointed to have not won this game but they were very impressive at times and will take some good heart from the game with Ken Mc Tigue, Martin Reilly and Niall Byrne impressing while Jimmy Kelliher in goals can be very proud of his evenings work in goal for Dunshaughlin.
