U16FL2: Awesome Aaron dismantles the Tones

April 15, 2015

Trim's Aaron Lynch

Trim  3-14  Wolfe Tones  4-05

Report by Brian Dowling

Aaron Lynch shot a fantastic 1-09 as Trim put last week's defeat to Drumconrath/Meath Hill behind them to take an important two points away from Kilberry.

Two early second half goals for the town side proved to be the difference as the Tones heads began to drop.

Wolfe Tones got off to the better start with big full forward Sárán Ó'Fionnagáin finding the net with all of nearly two minutes played. Lynch replied with a pointed free a minute later.

The Tones scored three further points including a penalty, before Trim began to take a foothold in the game. First centre forward Gavin Griffith pointed before Lynch knocked over two further frees. Then the goal came, a free won in the corner by Trim corner back Michael Mahon was quickly taken to midfielder Jack "Cotch" Cottrell who played it to Griffith on the 50, he tore off leaving his man for good before sending a bullet to the top corner from fourteen yards out to level proceedings. The next move, Trim pointed again, this time Lynch from play.

This was the first time Trim led in the match, but it didn't last long. The Tones were using the Route 1 tactic and just before the half time whistle Ó'Fionnagáin netted again to give Wolfe Tones a 2-4 to 1-5 lead.

Trim tore straight into the Tones at the start of the second half, scoring two points inside the opening four minutes. First Brian "Beano" Dowling made a long run from his own half before pointing from distance. Soon after Lynch pointed again from play, after a lovely ball in, he took on his man and curled one over.

Wolfe Tones replied with a fantastic solo goal from wing forward Caolan Ward, before Trim took complete control. Mark Murray pointed from play, while soon after Beano pointed again. Then the game changed.

A long ball in from a free from Cotch was dropped by Tones keeper Oisín Corrigan, and there was Mark Murray, on hand to steer the ball into the empty net. Immediately after, Griffith played a lovely ball into Lynch, who palmed it past the keeper and slotted it home.

Lynch added two further frees, including a beauty off the outside of his boot from a tough angle, before Ó'Fionnagáin pointed again.

Trim closed out the game the stronger team scoring three unanswered points to leave six points to spare and collect the valuable two points on offer.
Trim will be delighted with this great win after suffering a horrendous opening game defeat at home to Drumconrath/Meath Hill. This will push on the team, who now face St.Colimcilles in Loman's Park, Trim next Tuesday evening.

Wolfe Tones Report

Wolfe Tones 4-5
Trim 3-13

Although Wolfe Tones dominated much of the first half they would rue seven first half wides, some of them goal chances, as they were unable to withstand a much improved Trim second half performance.

After 20 minutes Tones led by 1-4 to 0-2 but were rocked by the concession of 1-3 over the next period to trail 1-4 to 1-5 as the first period reached a conclusion. However Saran O Fionnagáin scored a goal on the stroke of half time to ensure a 2 point lead for the Tones at the interval.

Trim narrowed the gap to one point in the 32nd minute but Wolfe Tones'  Gearóid O Brien finished brilliantly to the net in response. However that was as good as it got for the Tones as Trim began to dominate possession and whittle away the Tones lead. Tones could only add 1-1 for the remainder of the half, the point coming from Saran O Fionnagáin while Caolán Ward soloed through the heart of the Trim defence to score the goal. However they conceded 2-7 during that period and were unable to match Trim's workrate in the middle third of the pitch.

Prominent  for the Tones were Rowan and Neil Murray, Alan Lynam, Iarlaith O Kelly Lynch, Caolán Ward, Gearóid O Brien and Saran O Fionnagain.
