MFL: Michaels leave it late

March 30, 2015

Christopher Drew is put under pressure against Simonstown

St. Michaels 1-8, Simonstown Gaels 0-11.

St. Michaels minors left it late to earn a share of the points in Simonstown on Friday night as a late Ben Reilly point prevented a single point loss for the fourth game running. The home side opened in impressive fashion racing into a 4 point lead after 11 minutes, St. Michaels on the other hand didn't open their account until the 19th minute when Shane McDonnell sent over from a free. A minute later the same player had the opportunity to put his team on level terms from the penalty spot, however his shot was saved by the Gaels keeper and when Shane hit the rebound it was again blocked by the alert custodian.  Simonstown went further in front when they pointed again on 26 minutes, however a point apiece from Stephen Dolan and Ben Reilly reduced the half time deficit for St. Michaels to 0-3 to 0-5.

Whatever was said by the St. Michaels management team during the interval seemed to have the desired effect as they looked much more lively after the break. Ben Tobin and Ray Reilly found the target to level the match 3 minutes into the half. A minute later Ray Reilly who had an excellent game, found Ben Reilly in open space and the latter made no mistake in finding the back of the net for the games only major. Shane McDonnell stretched the St. Michaels lead to 4 points on 38 minutes, however the home side opened their second half account on 43 minutes with a pointed free, this was soon followed with a point from play, Ben Tobin put a goal between the sides again on 46 minutes, but his side failed to find the target again in normal time Simonstown added 4 without reply to go one point ahead in the 59th minute. St. Michaels rallied and with 3 minutes of injury time on the clock they won a free and Tobin sent a high speculative ball into the home goalmouth which found Ben Reilly who sent it over the cross-bar for the levelling score.
