AFL2: Ultan's lose by a point to Michael's

March 30, 2015

Mark Allen St Ultans puts pressure on Jamie Reilly (St Michaels) during the NFL Division 2 game in Sean Newman Park.

St. Michaels got back to winning ways in Bohermeen on Sunday afternoon after securing this victory with a Ronan Lynch converted free in the 7th minute of injury time. Neither sides will be pleased with their performances in this game which didn't come to life until the second half.

The home side played with the advantage of a strong wind in the opening half and they will rue the number of missed chances they had in that opening half as time and again they were wide of the target. St. Michaels were more economical in front of the posts and were first on the scoreboard with a pointed free from Ronan Lynch. A Matthew Halpin long range effort came off the cross-bar with the keeper beaten, St. Ultans fired over two points in as many minutes to go in front, a Ronan Cassidy point levelled matters on 12 minutes however scores were at a premium for the remainder of the half with the home side putting 3 on the board with the Lynch brothers, Ronan and David registering one apiece for St. Michaels to leave them trailing by just a point at half time 0-5 to 0-4.

The home side returned for the second half with renewed vigor and in the opening 6 minutes had 1-1 on the board to lead by 1-6 to 0-4. a Peter O'Connell point steadied the St. Michaels ship on 38 minutes, two minutes later the hard working Felim O'Reilly sent over from open play. The St. Michaels recovery was further boosted when substitute Johnny Reilly's first touch resulted in a point, a minute later another St. Michaels substitute Jamie Farrelly intercepted a St. Ultans pass and split the posts to leave just one point between the sides. Sam Briody who battled all afternoon and won plenty of dirty ball around the middle third set up Ronan Cassidy who sent over a beauty on the run to level the match for the third time at the end of the third quarter. However back came St. Ultans with two unanswered points, they then lost their no 9 Kevin Galligan through injury and when play resumed following a long break it was St. Michaels who responded best with a brace of points from David and Ronan Lynch to level matters once again. Another converted free from Lynch put his side back in front, with time running out St. Ultans moved swiftly upfield  and sent one over in the 5th minute of added time but there was still time for another St. Michaels attack which resulted in another free which Ronan Lynch split the posts with to secure a one point victory.

St Ultans Report

St Ultans 1-9
St Michaels 0-13

St Ultans will be disappointed in not getting anything from the keenly contested Division 2 league game.

St Ultans played with a strong breeze and shaded the first half exchange leading 0-5 to 0-3 at half time.  The blustery conditions didn't help matters as both sides struggled to adapt and quality football was at a premium.

The second half opened up a bit with both sides playing better. Ultans started brightly with a goal from Cian Rennicks on 7 minutes.  The home team did not capatilise on this with Michaels clawing back the lead and eventually winning by one.

Kevin Galligan went off with a serious looking injury close to end and we hope it is not too serious. Best for Ultans were Ronan Breslin, Cian Rennicks and Declan Galligan.

St Ultan's- Cian Farnan, Martin Dolan, Sean O 'Hoibheard, Jason Bennett, Ronan Breslin, Declan Galligan, Ronan Galligan, Kevin Galligan, Conor Smyth, Darren Mallon, Mark Allen, Stephen Quirke, Cian Rennicks, Tony Smyth. Subs - Kieran Rogers for Ronan Breslin, Emmet Costello for Kevin Galligan

Scorers - Cian Rennicks 1-4, Mark Allen 0-1, Conor Smyth 0-1, Tony Smyth 0-1, Stephen Quirke 0-1, Ronan Breslin 0-1.
