Ladies FL2: First half goals undo St Michaels

March 23, 2015

Sinead McCormack - St Michaels

St. Michaels 1-9, Royal Gaels 2-10

Two first half goals, the first in the opening minute set Royal Gaels on the road to victory last night in this second round match played in Moynalty. The visitors got off to a great start with a goal on 30 seconds, however St. Michaels made a slow start and could only manage 2 points, one each  from Sinéad McCormack and Marion Farrelly in the opening 15 minutes at which point they were trailing by 0-2 to 1-3. It should have been a lot better for St. Michaels at this stage but for some very poor finishing from in front of the posts as they missed a bagful of easy chances to be at least on level terms. Royal Gaels on the other hand scored with every attack and raised their second green flag on 22 minutes to finished the half 2-4 to 0-4 to the good. Sinéad McCormack and Megan O'Brien picked off a point apiece to close the half for St. Michaels.

The third quarter produced just 4 points but only one of those was for St. Michaels as Megan O'Brien found the target 6 minutes after the restart, Aisleen Regan (0-2) and Sinéad McCormack (0-1) fired over in the 4th quarter to reduce the deficit to 5 points, but the visitors rallied with two points to put seven between the sides, a Marion Farrelly point and a well taken goal from substitute Seona Lynch brought it back to a three point game but time ran out for St. Michaels as Royal Gaels headed up-field and secured the insurance point in the second minute of injury time.

Along with the scorers others to impress for St. Michaels were Ellen Cassidy, Mary Carpenter, Hayley Doyle and Áine Sheridan and Jillian Brogan.
