NHL Div 2B: Meath back on track

February 23, 2015

Meath captain Damien Healy

After a disappointing loss to Kildare in the opening round of the National Hurling League Division 2B Meath got back on track with an eight point win over Mayo.

Meath 3-8 Mayo 0-9

Overnight heavy rain deemed McHale Park unplayable and the game was switched to Bekan, The Connacht Centre of Excellence.

Martin Ennis' charges laid the foundation for this win in the first half. Playing with the wind Meath raced in to a nine point lead. Willie McGrath and Alan Douglas got in for early goals. McGrath and Douglas along with Jack Regan added points and Meath led 2-3 to 0-0. Mayo got their first scores through Eoghan Collins, Austin Lyons and Brian Hunt to narrow the gap but as half time approached Jack Regan fired a free to the Mayo net to give the visitors a 3-6 to 0-4 interval lead.

Mayo needed goals in the second half but  the Meath defence led by captain for the day Damien Healy along with keeper Charlie Bird, Shane Brennan and Cormac Reilly were in no mood to coincide three pointers. Jack Regan and Paddy Conneely kept the scoreboard ticking over  for Meath in the second period to keep the home side at bay.

Mayo woes were complete when midfielder Gary Nolan was shown a red card by referee John Keane towards the end.
