Awards: Senior Hurling Team of the Year

December 17, 2014

Our senior hurling team of the year.

Its that time of the year again when our team at hoganstand.com, with a little bit of time on their hands, sit down and decide where our awards should go. We start off with our senior hurling team of the year.

Following the excitement of this year's hurling championships, picking what we feel is the best XV of the 2014 campaign was not an easy task.
It was an excellent campaign in the senior hurling championship that concluded with Kiltale being crowned champions for the second time in three years.

1. Shane McGann (Kiltale)
May have only played towards the latter end of the championship, having been in the U.S for the summer, but proved yet again that he is the best goalkeeper in the county.

2. Ciaran Ennis (Kiltale)
Played his way back into the side this year and ever dependable throughout the campaign. His experience was invaluable.

3. David Donoghue (Kiltale)
Drove his side on at every opportunity and popped up for the odd crucial score as well. Gives his all, regardless of what position he plays.

4. Thomas Raleigh (Killyon)
Without doubt the best corner back in Meath. Intelligent play has set up many scores and is able to take a point when the opportunity arises.

5. John Donoghue (Kiltale)
May be more accustomed to centre back, but had to be fit into the team somewhere. Led by example at the heart of the defence as Kiltale won their fifth Jubilee Cup.

6. Colm Doyle (Trim)
One of the most stylish hurlers in the county. Must be a contender for hurler of the year. His vision launched many attacks for Trim.

7. Padraig Kelly (Kiltale)
Excelled at midfield and wing back at different stages during the campaign. Has really come on in the last few years and his performance in the county final was excellent.

8. Anthony Forde (Kiltale)
When Kiltale struggled at stages during games, more often than not, it was Forde that pulled them through. His goal in the county final was nothing short of sublime.

9. Sean Heavey (Kildalkey)
A real thorn in the oppositions' side. His work rate throughout the campaign played a big part in Kildalkey reaching the semi-final.

10. Sean Quigley (St Peter's Dunboyne)
Introduced after 20 minutes in SF and scored 0-3 to add to the many scores he got throughout the campaign.

11. Ger O'Neill (Kilmessan)
Some inspirational performances from the veteran once again. His display against Killyon in the last group game was immense.

12. James Toher (Trim)
Is up there now alongside Stephen Clynch as being regarded the best hurler in the county. Excellent year for the talented midfielder.

13. Jack Regan (Kiltale)
Really turned on the style in the semi-final and final. Some of the scores he got in the decider will live long in the memory.

14. Anthony Healy (Longwood)
A real scoring powerhouse from both open play and frees; helping to show that their appearance in the county final 12 months earlier was no fluke.

15. Alan Douglas (Trim)
Carried an injury into the final, which hampered him. Deserved to display his full array of talents on the biggest stage of Meath hurling. Excellent year.
