Bective GFC Launches Club History to Mark 50th Anniversary Celebrations

November 13, 2014

Another great occasion for Bective

Bective GFC celebrates its 50th aniversary later this month and to mark the occasion the south Navan club has proudly launched a 170-page history entitled "Bective GFC 1964-2014: The First 50 Years".

The four-strong book committee was comprised of Shane Breslin, Manus Tiernan, Tommy "Speedie" Reilly and Joey Geraghty, who was one of the founding members in late 1964 and is now in his fourth stint as Chairman, having previously filled the role in the 1970s, '80s and '90s.

Sources included the accounts of members, players and officials past and present, the Meath Chronicle archives, Meath County Library and the minute books of the club's two long-serving secretaries, current incumbent Seamus Davis and the late John Moran, who spent 21 years as Secretary after joining Bective in 1979.

Among the 170 pages are 28 pages of pictures from the 1960s until the present day, including colour photos of all the teams who represented Bective in our anniversary year. The book also includes personal "Down Memory Lane" accounts from a series of people connected to the club over the years, articles outlining the history of the underage club and the special relationship with Cannistown National School, and tributes to the dearly departed Mick Morris and John Moran, Bective's representatives in the Meath GAA Hall of Fame having served the club for a phenomenal 46 and 34 years respectively.

Chairman Joey Geraghty said, "It's a personal honour to be the Club Chairman in Bective's 50th year, and I'm thrilled with the finished product. It's a brilliant memento for the club and I'm certain that anyone who picks it up will find it of great interest - all the more so if you're connected with Bective, but for anyone interested in GAA or local history too."

The book, which will retail for €10, will be available for the first time at the 50th anniversary celebration evening, which takes place at the Ardboyne Hotel on Friday night, November 21st.

A buffet dinner will be served on the night and there will be music from Twister.

Joey Geraghty continued, "We're really looking forward to November 21st and celebrating with so many people who are still involved in the club and catching up with other old friends who played their part in our history. Thousands of people have passed through Bective over the years and we look forward to seeing many of them again next Friday week."

Tickets for this special occasion, which also includes a presentation to members of the 1989 Division 3 Football Championship winning team and the medal ceremony for the 2014 Tailteann Cup, are available from any committee member.
