U15FL 2 semi: Tones through to final

November 10, 2014

Caolan Ward - Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 4-14
Oldcastle 3-3

Wolfe Tones booked a spot in the U15 Division 2 final with their second victory over Oldcastle in just five days.

The return of Oisin Mac Ghinneartaigh to the fray strengthened the Tones midfield and contrary to last Monday's encounter, it was the Tones who started the brighter.

Saran O'Fionnagain gave the Tones the perfect start with a goal straight from the throw-in following a long delivery from Oisin Mac Ghinneartaigh. A further 1-3 in the opening quarter left the Tones in a commanding position with a lead of 2-4 to 0-0, O'Fionnagain helping himself to a further 1-2 while also turning provider for Iarlaith O'Kelly-Lynch to fire over from close range.

Oldcastle finally got off the mark and brought themselves back into the game with two quickfire goals in the 20th minute, the first coming from a rather soft penalty decision. Wolfe Tones reacted well, however, and with Caolan Ward prominent, the Tones extended their lead with a further six points without reply. Half time Wolfe Tones 2-9 Oldcastle 2-0.

With almost a carbon copy of the opening goal of the game, a move from the second half throw-in earned Tones a penalty which O'Fionnagain dispatched. Oldcastle then enjoyed their best spell of the game and added 1-1, while also having a penalty well saved by keeper Oisin Corrigan. This was a let-off for the Tones and seemed to relax the team as they gradually reasserted their dominance.

Wolfe Tones tightened up their defence and added 1-5 without reply between the 40th and 55th minute to wrap up proceedings and guarantee a spot in the Division 2 decider. Wolfe Tones now await the winners of O'Mahony's and Skryne.

This was a fine team performance with good individual showings from Jake McFadden, Alan Lynam and Rioghan Mac Ghinnerataigh. Caolan Ward and Saran O'Fionnagain combined to great effect throughout the game with the Tones getting a lot of joy from long direct football.
