U21 FC: impressive Simonstown advance to semi-finals

October 12, 2014

Simonstown's Donagh Fitzpatrick

Simonstown Gaels 2-17
Skryne  0-12

Simonstown got off to a great start in this U-21 quarter final encounter played in Kilberry on Sunday morning.

Indeed the game was delayed for a half hour due to heavy fog, but when the ball was thrown in by referee Jason Smyth, Simonstown quickly asserted thanks to points from Donagh Fitzpatrick, Niall O'Mahony and Nathan O'Brien. An excellently taken goal from midfielder Mark Gardiner and three points in quick succession from full forward Nicky O'Brien put daylight between the sides. Another Gardiner point, one from Brian McGrath and a Conor Sheridan 45" afforded Simonstown a 1-9 to 0-4 interval lead.

Good defensive play from Simonstown's full-back Shane Gallagher and Niall Kane at centre half-back help close down Skryne's attacking threat. At the other end, Nathan O'Brien added on another four second half points and although Skryne rallied midway through this period, Simonstown finished the stronger. Two points for Fitzpatrick, another from Brian McGrath and O'Mahony and an opportunist goal from substitute Christopher O'Neill saw the game conclude on a scoreline of Simonstown 2-17, Skryne 0-12.
