MFC: Simonstown exit at quarter-final stage AET

October 11, 2014

Skryne  3-13
Simonstown Gaels 1-17 aet

Skyrne started this Minor Football Championship quarter-final in rapid fashion, registering a goal in the first minute through full forward Paddy Doherty.

Simonstown's full forward, Ben Hoey, got the team in sky blue off the mark with a point, but blasted a penalty high and wide to the keepers right shortly after. The home team dominated the first half and three points from John Morley afforded Skryne a 1-7 to 0-4 half-time lead.

Simonstown came to life in the second half and quickly redressed the balance. Six unanswered points from Conor Farrell, Conor Nash, Brían Conlon, Ben Hoey and a brace from Brian McGrath drew them level. Although in the ascendancy, Simonstown never held the lead and Skryne twice went two points ahead only to be hauled back by scores from Conor Nash and Ben Hoey. Christopher Smith, Óisin Lavin Kelly and Brían Conlon were instrumental in Simonstown's comeback and but for an injury to Conlon early on, the result could have been much different. Referee Ciarán Flynn brought proceedings to a halt as the game finished in a draw - Skryne 1-11, Simonstown Gaels 0-14.

Skryne scored 1-2 in the first period of extra-time as Simonstown could only muster another Nash point. Nash again pointed in second period but another goal from the home side gave them a comfortable advantage. However a Ben Hoey point and a converted penalty in the closing stages left just two between the sides at the end. Skryne advanced on a score-line of Skryne 3-13, Simonstown 1-17.

Best for Simonstown were Brían Conlon, Christopher Smith and Óisin Lavin Kelly.
