Meath Football Team of the Week

October 08, 2014

The hoganstand.com Meath football team of the week.

It was a weekend to savour for football fans with two senior semi-finals and the deciders at intermediate and junior level. Here's our choice of the fifteen outstanding players on view.

1. Johnny O'Connor (Dunboyne)

A solid performance from the St Peters number 1 that included a magnifcent save from a John Casserley shot in the closing stages of the Junior final.

2. Robbie Farrell (Ballinlough)

First to the ball on every occasion. Held his opponent scoreless as The Reds reached the holy grail at Pairc Tailteann.

3. Conor Carton (Donaghmore Ashboune)

Answered all questions asked of him. The former county minor dominated a very potent Na Fianna full forward line as 'The Moores' advanced to the SFC final.

4. Niall McKeigue (Navan O'Mahonys)

The veteran defender seems to get better with age. Handed the task of marking Cian Ward and carried out his duties to great effect.

5. Lorcan Maguire (Ballinlough)

Another very composed display from the half back. Confident in possession and very clever use of the ball as the Mattie McDonnell Cup was brought home.

6. Shane Melia (Donaghmore Ashbourne)

Not the first time to make our weekly selection. Fast becoming one of the best defenders in the county.

7. Darragh McGovern (Donaghmore Ashbourne)

Brilliant reading of the game against Na Fianna. Now established as a vital link in the Ashbourne defence and rarely gives possession away.

8. Bryan Menton (Donaghmore Ashbourne)

The Moores captain led by example against Na Fianna. Finished with 1-2, his goal one of the best this year so far.

9. Cormac McGuinness (Navan O'Mahonys)

It was one of his first starts of the years and you wouldn't think he was out of the game for a long time with injury. Dominated the middle sector against a much vaunted Wolfe Tones midfield.

10. Dan Queeney (Na Fianna)

His cultured left foot was on fire despite the defeat to Donaghmore Ashbourne. Kicked five great points in the semi final.

11. Peadar Byrne (Ballinlough)

A real tour de force from the former county man. Scored eight points and was the best player on view over the weekend.

12. Ruairi O Coilean (Navan O'Mahonys)

Great work rate from the half forward especially in the early stages of the second half when Davy Nelson's charges were under extreme pressure.

13. Ryan O'Rourke (Cortown)

A lot depended on the young shoulders of O'Rourke in the county final and the Cortown star delivered. Finished with 1-4 out of Cortown's 1-10 tally.

14. Danny Quinn (Ballinabrackey)

Never gave up for the Bracks cause. Scored three points and gave a lot of problems to a well drilled Ballinlough defence.

15. Michael Deegan (Donaghmore Ashbourne)

If Donaghmore Ashbourne are to go the whole way a lot will depend on young Deegan. Superb from placed balls and general play against Na Fianna.
