Rathkenny 2-15 North Meath Gaels 3-7

North Meath Gaels gave favorite's a right scare on Sunday morning in Round 1 of the Minor Championship. North Meath moved up a few Divisions following their Minor League win earlier in the year started really well with Matthew Carolan and Robert McEntaggert getting early goals as North Meath led 2-0 after 8 minutes and some missed chances during this time from frees and play were to cost them dearly.

With Rathkenny club seniors Cathleach Halligan, Stephan Crosbie and Thomas McGuinnes along with the accurate Sean Mongey and Louis Timmons coming more into the game Rathkenny slowly began to claw their way back into the game but a 3rd goal from Daniel Byrne kept North Meath ahead as points from Paul Carolan and James Mooney opened a bit of a gap again.

A high ball into the North Meath area resulted in Mongey fisting to the net and this was the break that Rathkenny needed as the sides retired level at half time 3-2 to 1-8.

Early 2nd half scores pushed Rathkenny ahead and when Halligan netted with 10 minutes to go Rathkenny looked like they would go on and win easily but North Meath battled right to the end as scored some fine points from Mooney (2), Conor Marry, Ryan Owens and Paul Carolan and while they had a few goals chances the Rathkenny rearguard held strong to win what was a good competitive Minor Championship match.
