Div 4 FL Final: Silverware for Longwood

September 15, 2014

Ryan Moore kicks a point for Longwood despite the best efforts of Nicky Gogan and David Gogarty during the Division 4 FL decider at Bective.

Longwood 2-14
St Marys 2-9

Longwood footballers won their first piece of silverware since winning the Meath junior football championship in 2009 by claiming the All County League Division 4 title at St Mary's expense in Bective.

The winners dominated the first half and brought a 1-8 to 0-3 lead in at the break. County man Michael Burke kicked the games opening score. Stephen Bishop replied for Marys before Longwood took over. Ryan Moore, Eoin Lynch and Rory Maguire pointed to open up a three point lead. St Marys then gave away a penalty, Burke's effort was well saved by Derek O'Brien but the county star got the rebound and The Wood were 1-4 to 0-1 up after 15 minutes. Brendan Hanna and Burke added further points as the half entered the last five minutes. Cormac Drew and Eoin Morrison sent over for Marys but they went in at the break eight points down.

The second half was a more lively affair. Nathan O'Neill got Longwood's second goal after ten minutes and the game looked all but over. Referee Jason Smyth issued red cards to Stephen Bishop (St Marys) and Longwood's Eoin Lynch and with ten minutes remaining The Wood were still in control 2-13 to 0-6. A goal from substitute Luke Sullivan kick started the Donore revival. This was quickly followed by another three pointer from Mickey Everard and the gap was down to six. The Marys continued to dominate. Drew and Robbie Callaghan sent over points but time ran out for the Donore men and Longwood were crowned champions.

After the game Meath County Board Vice Chairman Peter O'Halloran presented the Division 4 League Cup to Longwood joint captains Vinny Byrne and Ryan Moore.
