Camogie: brilliant draw in junior county final

Donaghmore/ Ashbourne 1-9
Drumree 1-9

Donaghmore/Ashbourne ladies survived a tough examination yesterday and battled back to secure a draw in the Junior Camogie Championship Final in Dunboyne.

Following a convincing win over the same opposition in a group game 2 weeks ago the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne ladies were favourites for victory but finals are rarely that straight forward and Drumree had no intention of giving an easy game.

Following a strong start to the game Donaghmore/ Ashbourne raced into a 3 points to no score lead but Drumree came in to the game in a determined fashion and at half time the score was 0-5 to 0-4 to Donaghmore/Ashbourne.

Drumree began the second half as they finished the first and took the lead for the first time within minutes.  A Drumree goal half way through the second half left the Donaghmore/Ashbourne ladies in a precarious position, entering the final few minutes of the game 4 points in arrears.

The Donaghmore/ Ashbourne cause was given a major boost when a Roisin Williams catch and run resulted in Janice O'Neill smashing a shot to the back of the Drumree net. With the excitement building around the pitch and both teams giving everything Drumree were denied victory with the last puck of the game when Maggie Randall drove the sliotar over the bar from 30 yards to secure what looked like an unlikely result for the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne girls.
