JFCA: Summerhill advance

August 17, 2014
Summerhill 1-14
Kilmainhamwood 1-9

Summerhill advanced to a preliminary quarter-final in the Meath JFC after beating Kilmainhamwood in Martry on Sunday.

For two hours, Summerhill overtook Cortown in second place in Group B and looked set to advance automatically to the last eight. However, Cortown beat already qualified Curraha by eight points in Páirc Tailteann which meant the north Meath club progressed straight to the quarter-finals at the expense of Summerhill.

Summerhill were lining out without three players that featured in the round 4 victory over Dunshaughlin in July. Eamonn McDonnell, Ronan Ryan and captain Gary Rispin all started for the seniors on Saturday evening which means they are ineligible to play any Junior championship football for the remainder of 2014.

The three aforementioned ineligible players were replaced by Iarla Hughes, Jack Regan and Michael Gorman.

There was nothing to separate the sides when the half-time whistle blew, 0-5 apiece.

Brian Rispin got two points for Summerhill while there was scores for Michael Gorman, Eamonn Ryan and Jeremy Ennis.

Rispin almost scored a goal when he got a hand to a ball delivered to the edge of the square but Kilmainhamwood goalkeeper parried the effort on to the post.

Former Meath senior Ray Magee kept the 'Wood in touch with four of his side's five points, half of which came from open play.

Summerhill became more clinical after the interval. Rispin added two more scores to bring his account for the day to four points.

Eamonn Ryan shot low to the Kilmainhamwood net to give his team some breathing space. Ryan bagged two more points and half-back Jack Regan showed the composure of a forward as he scored three points.

Kilmainhamwood scored a goal of their own but it proved a mere consolation. They finished Group B in fifth position with just one win out of five.

Summerhill will play the third placed team in Group C in a preliminary quarter-final with the date of the fixture to be confirmed.

Summerhill: Robbie McDonnell; Iarla Hughes, Eoghan Jennings, Patrick Troy; Jack Regan (0-3), Mark Gannon, Declan Lyons; Paddy McGrath, Michael Gorman (0-1); Eamonn Ryan (1-3), Tommy Lynch, Conor Lyons; Gary McDonnell, Brian Rispin (0-4), Jeremy Ennis (0-1). Subs: Justin Ennis (0-1) for T Lynch, Eamon O'Shea (0-1) for Jeremy Ennis, Harry Hatton for G McDonnell, Cian Devlin for P Troy, Cathal Ryan for C Lyons.
