BFL4: Michael's into final

July 28, 2014

St Michaels Ben Farrell
St. Michaels 1-12
Longwood 0-12

St. Michaels reserve team booked themselves a place in the division 4 final with one game still to play after a deserved victory over Longwood in a tough encounter in Longwood on Saturday evening last.

St. Michaels put in a great first half performance when playing with the aid of a lively breeze, they galloped into an 8 point lead before Paddy Melia sounded the half time whistle.

Lee Morris opened their account in perfect fashion with a well executed goal in the fourth minute, this was quickly followed with points from Johnny Reilly, Ben Farrell, Ben Tobin and Philip Rogers to lead by 1-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. By this stage St. Michaels were in control all over the pitch as their defence was well organized, they were in control around the middle third and their forwards could do little wrong in front of the posts, Ben Farrell converted two frees and two fine efforts from play from Ronan Cassidy and a further point from Johnny Reilly left the visitors 1-9 to 0-4 up at the break as Longwood added two further points on the trot in the 25th and 26th minute.

A Ben Farrell converted free in the opening minute of the second half stretched his teams lead to 9 points but as teams often do when having such a lead St. Michaels took their foot off the pedal and failed to score again until the 52nd minute by which time Longwood had whittled the deficit down to 4 points but two points on the trot in quick succession from Johnny Reilly and Darren O'Connell steadied the St. Michaels ship but there were anxious moments in the remaining 8 minutes as Longwood parked themselves in the visitors half of the pitch but they failed to breach the solid St. Michaels defence registering just one point with the last kick of the ball.
