AFL2: Nobber down Castletown

July 28, 2014

Castletown's Gerry Farrelly
Nobber 0-13
Castletown 0-9

Castletown travelled the short distance to take on neighbours Nobber in this division 2 encounter. With both sides both firmly in the mix for promotion the evening had the feel of championship fare. In truth it was Nobber who showed the required intensity and ran out 4 points winners.

Nobber, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, got out of the blocks quicker. Some missed frees aside they were economical in front of goal, keeping the scoreboard ticking over throughout the first half. At the other end Castletown found it hard to create the space inside to trouble the home side. Eventually James Finnerty opened the Castletown account with a nice score from the left. Noel Smyth was doing all in his power to slow down the Nobber men, putting his body on the line time and time again. Overall, the first half was low in quality as neither team could find a rhythm. Score at the break was Nobber 0-7 Castletown 0-3.

The second half folled much the same pattern. Castletown had long spells of posession and pressure however Nobber were able to break at speed and tap over points. The referee, using the new advantage rule to its limits, brought back play on a number of occasions when it looked like the ball was turned over. Such decisions accounted for 3 of Nobbers second half points. Mid way through the second period it looked like Castletown were gaining the upper hand. Gerry Farrelly began to see more of the ball, Shane Farrelly began to score at will and was supported in this role by Barry Smith. Kenny Smith had the best goal chance of the game well saved.

Just as Castletown were looking to deliver the knockout blow Nobber took over again with a couple of well worked scores. A Paul Smith save kept the game in the melting pot. The game then lost some of its shape, player positions meaning very little as both teams worked their socks off for their respective causes. In the end it was the home team that showed the composure to close out the game and continue on the road to league glory. Castletown now turn their attentions to the championship matters.
