AFL3: Ultans claim victory
July 16, 2014
Cian Rennicks St Ultans
St Ultans put in a work man like performance to claim victory over Kilmainhamwood played in excellent conditons on Tuesday evening.
In a nervous first half, Ultans dominated posession but were frustrated with bad shooting and poor decision making in front of the opposition goal. It was left to the ever reliable and excellent Cian Rennicks to set Ultans on the way with a well worked goal midway through first half. Further points followed from Darren Mallon, Emmet Costello and Rennicks to see Ultans leading 1.07 to 0.05 at the break.
Ultans improved in front of goal in second half and maintained their momentum with the hard working Tony Smyth netting a goal and points from Kevin Galligan, Stephen Quirke and Ronan Breslin helping Ultans to finish game with a comfortable victory.
This was a huge win for St Ultans, gaining promotion to Division 2 of the league and also a Division 3 league final to look forward to later in the year. This will bring huge satisfaction to their loyal supporters after a few difficult years of loosing players to emigration. This year the trend has changed with exiled players returning and the team also boosted by a new burst of dedicated underage talent coming through.
On the night Ultans had excellent performances with Sean O'Hoireabhard putting in man of match performance from corner back, Ronan Breslin, Ronan Galligan, Conor &Tony Smyth and Emmet Costello.
Ultans and joint managers of Paddy Diamond and Tommy Dowd will be delighted with result and know that team will need to bring this league form into remaining championship games to gain much needed victories.

Kilmainhamwood report:
Kilmainhamwood 0 - 08
v
St. Ultans 2 - 15
A result for both teams was important, but for very different reasons, St. Ultan's needed two points to extend their lead at the top of the table while two points for Kilmainhamwood meant safety could be more or less secured within Division 3, but this was not too be as St. Ultan's ran out 13 point winners overall, in a game which was played in perfect conditions in Kilmainhamwood.
The 'Wood were missing up to ten first team players through injury and for other reasons heading into this encounter and the difference showed as St. Ultan's put up a strong first half performance to go in at the break 1-07 to 0-05 in the lead, this could have being more as the visitors did not take advantage of their first half possession and tallied 13 wides. The 'Wood's first half scores came via three Stephen Kiernan points, two from play and one from a free, one from corner-forward David Russell and fine point from midfielder Harry Corbally.
St. Ultan's started to make possession count in the second-half and kicked a further 1-08 to run out 2-15 to 0-08 point winners overall, Kilmainhamwood's second-half scores came via a further two Kiernan points, one from play and another from a free and the last coming from substitute Damien Farrelly.
The result overall leaves Kilmainhamwood at the foot of Division 3 via goal difference, and with a fight on their hands to secure safety for next year.
Best for the 'Wood was Philip Moran and Emmet Clarke in defence, Harry Corbally in midfield and Stephen Kiernan in attack.
