JFC B: Mary's impress against Dunderry

April 14, 2014

St Mary's Stephen Bishop
St Marys 3-10
Dunderry 0-1

St Marys headed to Bective last evening to play their first Championship match of 2014, memories of a litany of wides in last year's semi-final defeat to Boardsmill still fresh in the mind. Four league wins on the bounce would count for nothing now.

St Marys settled well and were in the ascendancy from the throw-in and within 3 minutes James Lynch had scored the first point after some good interplay down the right wing. This was quickly followed by a Robbie Callaghan point. In the 12th minute Cormac Drew found himself at the end of a fine 4 man move and finished well past the Dunderry keeper to make it 1-2 to 0-0. A Stephen Bishop point followed and when the quick thinking Gary Teelan found James Lynch in space, Lynch powered forward and finished powerfully past the Dunderry Keeper. St Marys were now 9 points to the good and Dunderry were struggling to get a foothold in the contest. Then wing back Michael Everard scored well from close range. At this stage Dunderry were hoping for the half time whistle to blow when another move down the right eventually resulted in Cormac Drew finding Stephen Bishop at the edge of the 5 yard box Bishop palmed confidently to the net. Dunderry eventually got off the mark with a pointed free just as the half ended but not before a very nasty Shoulder injury to Dunderry's number 14 Shane Maguire. Half time St Marys, 3-5 Dunderry 0-1.

Due to the injury sustained by Shane Maguire the second half didn't start for a further 40 minutes as the medics waited for an Ambulance to come from Navan to treat the Dunderry man. When the second half got underway normal service was resumed however the bite was gone from the game due in no small part to the injury and perhaps the one sided nature of the contest. St Marys scored 2 early points from Robbie Callaghan one from play and one a pointed free. Stephen Bishop again scored from play and struck another point moments later when a goal seemed the inevitable conclusion to the move. Bishop popped up again to kick the last score of the game and round off a decent St Marys performance. Dunderry found the going difficult in the second period and this was understandable given the serious injury to their comrade. The score finished St Marys 3-10 Dunderry 0-1.
