U16FL2: Good win for Wolfe Tones

April 09, 2014

Caolan Ward - Wolfe Tones
Wolfe Tones 3-12
Ratoath 3-06

Wolfe Tones dominated the early exchanges and after 10 minutes led by three points to no score and could have been further ahead had Matthew Melady not been unlucky with two goal attempts.

However Ratoath gained parity around midfield and opened their account with a well worked point. Nathan Sheridan replied for the Tones with a goal to give the Tones a 5 point advantage on a scoreline of 1 03 to 0 01 after the first quarter. Ratoath then hit a purple patch scoring 1 02 without reply to leave the teams all square with 5 minutes remaining in the first half. Tones who had been rather wasteful in attack up to now became more direct in their approach play and put some good combination attacking play together to score 1 03 without reply in the run up to half time. The points came from Caolan Ward, Thomas Blaney and Matthew Melady with the goal coming from Nathan Sheridan. That left the half time score 2 06 to 1 03 in favour of the Tones.

The Tones maintained that momentum early in the second half and by the ¾ mark seemed to have put the issue beyond doubt as they held a 12 point lead on a scoreline of 3 10 to 1 04 thanks to a goal from Nathan Sheridan and points from Jake Mc Fadden, Éanna O Kelly Lynch and 3 from Sarán O Fionnagáin. Ratoath showing admirable spirit, refused to throw in the towel and boosted by 2 goals in a minute followed almost immediately by a point, found themselves within touching distance. The margin was now down to 5 points. Ratoath launched wave after wave of attack as the Tones began to tire and only fine saves from Oisin Corrigan and Luke Condi kept Ratoath at bay. Tones needed a steadying score and Thomas Blaney broke through the Ratoath defence to score a fine point. Indeed he could have wrapped it up shortly afterwards but saw his clever goal effort rebound off the upright. Saran O Fionnagáin scored another Tones point in the dying minutes but Tones still had to live on their nerves as Ratoath pressed forward and created a number of goal chances but their only reward was a pointed free. The final score was Wolfe Tones 3 12 Ratoath 3 06.
