Ladies IFC: Don Ash edge depleted Michaels

Mary Clinton and Ellen Cassidy keep their eye on the ball for St Michaels against Donaghmore Ashbourne

St. Michaels 0-14, Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-13                                   

Donaghmore / Ashbourne edged out a depleted St. Michael side in Ashbourne last evening in this third round of the Intermediate Championship.

The home side led from pillar to post and were 1-7 to 0-7 up at the interval playing with the advantage of a stiff breeze. Marion Farrelly top scored for St. Michaels as she picked off 5 points in the opening 20 minutes. Alicia Curtis and Seona Lynch also chipped in with a point apiece to leave St. Michaels trailing by a goal at half time 0-7 to 1-7, that goal coming for the home side after 21 minutes.  

The sides exchanged points in the third quarter and 3 points from Farrelly left just two between the sides at the end of the third quarter, however St. Michaels were left grasping at thin air when Donaghmore / Ashbourne bagged their second major in the 46th minute, but to their credit all the St. Michaels girls battled on and a point apiece from Farrelly and Mary Clinton left just three between the sides once again. The home side could always keep the St. Michaels girls at arms length and they finished in a flurry with 4 points in a three minute spell, but again back came St. Michaels with a point apiece from Marion Farrelly and Seona Lynch in the third minute of injury time by which stage the home side were home and hosed.

Marion Farrelly, Seona Lynch, Alicia & Lorraine Curtis, Mary Clinton and Mary Carpenter were all prominent throughout while Laura Duignan pulled off some fine saves between the posts to keep her side in the match.
