Galway captain Gary O'Donnell believes that the secret to their success over Mayo was simple, stick to their game plan.

The Tribesmen put an end to Mayo's dominance in the Connacht SFC as they brought a halt to their quest for a sixth consecutive title last Saturday evening.

It was a workmanlike and never say die attitude that saw Galway over the line and the defender felt that the fact they were given no chance was a huge incentive to themselves.

Speaking to the Western People, he said: "We were probably written off inside our own county, never mind anywhere else, but we had a big game plan coming in and we simply stuck to it.

"Even when we went three or four points down, the belief was there and we stuck to our guns and once we got in front we knew what we were at and I'm just delighted for the bunch of players more than anything else because we worked so hard, more than any other year you could say."
