Mayo board labelled 'dictatorship'

October 08, 2014

Mayo will need time to regroup.

A former Mayo county footballer has branded the county board as a 'dictatorship'.

PJ Monaghan who was chairman of the Steering Committee that put proposals forward to the Mayo County Board back in 2011, which were subsequently rejected by the executive has made the startling claim.

Speaking to the Western People he said: "Over the past four years we've come so very close to winning All-Irelands and you'd expect your county board to reflect on what has happened and to make a decision that was in the best interests of Mayo football in terms of going on and finishing the job with that group of players.

"It's only when the whole set of events start to unfold, just talking to a few people, we knew they were bad but we actually didn't know they were this bad. You look at things and think, 'what does this mean for our chances? What does this mean for the team?

Monaghan is currently sending out a survey questioning what Mayo supporters think of the county board and he feels that the general consensus will be the same.

"You feel there's a huge disconnection between the clubs and the county board. They're there really to represent the clubs, to do what's right for the clubs and what's right for Mayo football, and they've just become a dictatorship. It's the only word for them."
