Former All-Ireland final referee John Bannon believes David Coldrick was right to send off Mayo's Lee Keegan during yesterday's drawn All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

The All Star wing back was issued with a straight red card by the Meath official in the 33rd minute for aiming a kick in the direction of Kerry opponent Johnny Buckley. After the game, James Horan confirmed that Mayo will be appealing the decision in a bid to have Keegan available for next Saturday's replay.

"The red card shown to Lee Keegan was correct," Bannon insisted in his Irish Examiner column.

"Any attempt to kick with minimal force is a red card offence, and I'd be shocked if Mayo were able to overturn what's likely to be a one-match suspension."

The Longford man added: "The penalty decision was also right. Peter Crowley shouldered Donie Vaughan in the back and it merited a yellow card. Mayo fans around me felt it was a black card offence, but just because it was a goal-scoring opportunity doesn't necessarily mean the player should be issued a black card."
